Support Corinne in making a series of plein-air paintings in the Red Centre that will invite urban audiences to reconsider the desert’s mystical, sacred and environmental importance.

‘The Red Centre holds a unique position in the psyche and mythology of all Australians. Journey with me as I connect with nature and explore the majesty and extremes of the desert.’

Painting Expedition - MacDonnell Ranges - April 2024

About the Project - Into The Desert

Deserts have long been spaces of encounter and challenge, places that seem limitless through which we experience our own physical and metaphysical limits. In the desert wilderness we can inhabit solitude and silence, connecting with ourselves, others, nature and the path of dreaming. In this project, Into the Desert, landscape artist, Corinne Loxton, will investigate the spiritual and healing properties of the deserts of the Red Centre through a series of plein air and studio oil paintings. The project will begin with a 3-week residency in the vicinity of Alice Springs in April 2024. Here Corinne will immerse in the desert environment, deeply exploring her connection with the landscape, meeting with other artists and being mentored by indigenous women elders. She will produce approximately 25 plein air and studio artworks in and around Tjoritja, (The MacDonnell Ranges) that will be exhibited publicly in the Blue Mountains in June and Melbourne later in 2024.

Why is this important?

At a time of unprecedented focus on what it means to be an Australian inhabiting this land when the impacts of climate change are being felt across both urban and non-urban communities, where people are experiencing less connection with nature, greater social and physical isolation and increased reliance on technology, this project invites a reconsideration of the importance of the Red Centre deserts. As an artist living in the Blue Mountains Corinne is deeply connected to the landscape she calls home. She intentionally nurtures a mystical relationship with nature, spending hours walking, contemplating and painting in her local bushland. As a seasoned plein-air landscape artist, Corinne is uniquely positioned to create and exhibit work that investigates, challenges and redefines the role of the desert in the lives of contemporary Australians.

What will your money go towards?

All donations will support Corinne to be artist in residence at the Campfire in the Heart Retreat Centre, near Alice Springs for 3 weeks in April 2024 and subsequently mount exhibitions of the 25+ works she makes in the Blue Mountains in June, and in Melbourne later in the year. Financial support will go directly towards the costs of travel, accommodation, art materials and equipment, framing and shipping of artworks.
